New owners of the Norfolk Admirals said Monday they have no plans to relocate the team.

The Admirals, the ECHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, came under new ownership two weeks ago, a few days before the start of training camp and within two weeks of the season opener. On Sept. 29, Mango Media Group and Oilers Entertainment Group announced that Mango Media had acquired the Admirals from OEG, the previous owner. Two of the new owners, Michael Garvy and Ardon Wiener, held a roughly one-hour press conference with media and a handful of fans at Norfolk’s Scope Arena Monday afternoon.

“They’re very excited about keeping the team here in Norfolk,” said Walt Ruff, director of communications. “They reaffirmed that the team is here to stay.”

Garvy and Wiener also denied any intention of moving the team to New York, where their business is based. The New York market is saturated, Ruff said.

Instead, the new owners hope to build awareness of the Admirals in Hampton Roads.

“We want to reestablish or solidify our connection with the fans,” Ruff said.

As for day-to-day oversight, the new ownership team intends to play little role or in coaching or roster management, according to Ruff.

Separately, the Admirals announced Monday the team has picked up five players from its American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. Four of the five, Josh Brittain, Danick Gauthier, Aaron Harstad and Steve Tarasak, were released after AHL camp tryouts. The Condors assigned the fifth player, Frank Simonelli, to the Admirals.

The Admirals start the season on Friday, Oct. 14, with a game against the Kalamazoo Wings at Norfolk’s Scope Arena.
