Strap on your boxing gloves, and get ready to rumble – Norfolk is celebrating the grand opening of its new boxing center this weekend.
Norfolk’s hometown boxing team, Team Norfolk Boxing, will begin training at the 13,000-square-foot center on Nov. 7. Previously the team was training at Barraud Park Boxing Center, which is about 10,000 square feet smaller than the new facility, according to a city news release.
Team Norfolk Boxing boasts a history of two Olympic coaches and several nationally-ranked boxers. The program also hosts educational programs for the community, and the city plans to host large competitions and championship fights at the center.
The new training center, located in the Harbor Park Stadium at 150 Park Ave., is equipped with two U.S.A. boxing-regulation sized rings, stadium seating and punching bags for Team Norfolk Boxing to train on, the release states.
The city will begin celebrating the new facility on Friday at 5:30 p.m. when Mayor Kenneth Alexander and Norfolk Boxing Team members will ring the center’s bell. On Saturday there will be an open house from 10 a.m. to noon where the public can tour the center, watch demonstrations and get a souvenir picture.
