Blair Joshua Carr was thinking of killing himself before he decided to kill his mother.
Carr, 25, didn’t plan on serving prison time. He figured if he killed his mother, Rosetta Carr, he would work up the courage to kill himself as well, according to a Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney news release.
Carr’s plan failed when he turned himself in to the Virginia Beach Police Department on March 24, 2014 after two days of sitting in the house with his mother’s body.
Police say Carr beat and stabbed his mother to death on March 22, 2014 after the pair got into a fight over him getting a job or moving out of their home on the 900 block of Sedley Road. Carr had been hiding a knife under his bed for days leading up to the murder, but ended up using three knives to stab his mother because the cutlery kept breaking, the release states.
Virginia Beach Circuit Court Judge A. Bonwill Shockley found Carr guilty of first-degree murder on April 14, and sentenced him to 35 years in prison with 12 years suspended on Monday.
