A 54-year-old man has been charged with abduction and rape in a cold-case case dating back to 1988, police say.

Julian Romero was extradited on Nov. 8 to the Virginia Beach Correctional Center from the Maury Correctional Center, located in Hookerton, N.C., according to the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office.

Romero is accused of sexually assaulting a victim in the 800 block of 24th Street on May 24, 1988. The victim did not know the rapist at the time of the incident, Virginia Beach Police Department Master Police Officer Linda Kuehn wrote in an email.

The case was opened again in 2014 by Virginia Beach Police Department cold-case detectives, who filed charges against Romero. He is charged with rape and abduction with intent to defile, Kuehn wrote.

Romero was indicted by a grand jury on Dec. 1, 2014. His case is scheduled to be heard in Virginia Beach Circuit Court on Nov. 23.
